Dropped Your Phone in Water? Do This Right Away

The first hour matters most. What to do — and what not to do — after your phone takes a swim.

Water resistance isn't waterproof, and it weakens as phones age. If your phone gets wet, what you do next can decide whether it survives.

Do

  • Get it out and turn it off. Power running through wet circuits is what causes the real damage.
  • Remove the case and SIM tray. This lets trapped water escape.
  • Gently dry the outside with a lint-free cloth.
  • Bring it to us as soon as you can. Our liquid damage diagnostic is free.

Don't

  • Don't charge it to see if it still works.
  • Don't use a hair dryer — heat can damage the screen and battery.
  • Don't put it in rice. Rice doesn't pull water out of the inside of a phone, and the dust can get into the ports.
  • Don't shake it — that can push water deeper inside.

Salt water, pool water, or soda?

These are more corrosive than fresh water. Tell our technician what the phone was exposed to so we can clean it properly.
